A still image from an Ilford 8mm film of an athletics display, possibly at a public school in the 1960s

Fun Athletics display at a public school

This is a short excerpt from a vintage home movie which seems to have been taken at an athletics display at a public school.

The film was shot on Ilford standard 8 film and is somewhat poor quality so although it’s possible to clearly see what is going on with the athletes, making out the buildings and general surroundings is much harder.

I’ll admit I did a lot of google searching in my detective work whilst trying to find out where this film may have been taken. I tried multiple image searches of ‘buildings with tower’, ‘public school with square tower’, ‘school with clock tower’ etc but nothing has proven to be successful.

Admittedly, I’ve assumed it is a public school but I’ve no actual evidence to back that up other than the building looks as if it could be that. It’s equally possible this is a grammar school or an athletics display by a club which happened at a location unconnected with the buildings.

Athletics display film

The film starts with a very odd display of all the athletes falling on top of themselves, and then in a line on one of the mats on the grass; I also did a search to try to find out if this was a characteristic of some odd public school game, but again came up with nothing. If anyone watching this has any clue as to what is happening here I’d be very interested in finding out.

Following on from odd opening sequence, there is a more conventional display of athletics with men and boys performing on the parallel bars. At least one of the men showed a rather impressive display of strength as he holds himself parallel to the bars by just his arms.

All in all I guess both the people involved and those watching had a fun day out.
