Christmas or New Year party late 1950s

This snapshot from the late 1950s seems to show a Christmas or New Year's celebration party. It's a bit de-focussed and blurry, and unfortunately has some dust marks and dirt which makes it difficult to see too much detail in the shot, but it does seem to show people enjoying themselves and having a good time. I noticed a large club sign on the wall above the man on the left - I wondered if this was because there had been card games being played ?

FV4201 Chieftain Tank

This is a photo of a British main battle tank on public display, specifically a <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Chieftain tank</span></span>, which was the UK’s primary tank from the 1960s through to the 1980s. The crowd and display boards suggest this was taken during a military open day, exhibition, or airshow-type event which was common in the UK during the 1970s–80s.

MV Cowal on the Firth of Clyde.

This is a colour shot of a Clyde ferry in operation, the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">MV Cowal which is a</span></span>pproaching or leaving a pier somewhere on the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Firth of Clyde. </span></span> This was a passenger-and-vehicle ferry, with an open vehicle deck at the stern and a passenger promenade deck above. In the photo people can be seen gathered along the railings. The vessel’s livery—dark hull with a white superstructure—is typical of the old <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Caledonian Steam Packet Company</span></span>, later absorbed into <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Caledonian MacBrayne</span></span>.

Old Town Hall in Lindau

This is a classic 1970s tourist photo taken in the town of Lindau in southern Germany with beautiful historic architecture on the one hand and normal everyday life on the other. It was taken at a time when places like Lindau were just starting to become major tourist draws. &nbsp;

The Winter Palace St. Petersburg – mid 1980s

This is a colour slide of the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Winter Palace</span></span>, part of the larger <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Hermitage Museum</span></span> complex in <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Saint Petersburg which was probably taken in the mid 1980s, towards the end of the soviet era</span></span>. The Winter Palace was once the official residence of the Russian tsars and a central site during the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Russian Revolution of 1917</span></span>. By the time this photo was taken however, it had long been part of the state museum system.

Snapshot of helicopter over mountains

A snapshot of a helicopter taken over a mountain range from below. This was in a series of photos taken on a hiking trip, and I wonder if this was a mountain rescue helicopter called out to find some lost people? The slide has been attacked by fungus over the years which has resulted in the large blog of yellow in the top left hand corner.

Hawker Sea Hawk jet

This is a photo of a Hawker Sea Hawk jet fighter at a museum or possibly breakers yard which was probably taken in the 1970s. The Sea Hawk was one of the Royal Navy’s first successful jet fighters, entering service in the early 1950s. It was built by Hawker Aircraft and was designed for carrier operations with the Fleet Air Arm. Its notable features are all visible here: <ul> <li>The rounded nose air intake</li> <li>Straight wings (unlike later swept-wing jets)</li> <li>The low-slung, compact fuselage</li> </ul> It was used in combat during the Suez Crisis (1956), mainly in ground-attack roles. <h3 data-section-id="omqmvh" data-start="656" data-end="675"></h3>

The Lochiel in Bristol’s floating harbour

This is a photo of the “Lochiel” which was a small passenger/cargo vessel, often described as a coastal steamer or motor vessel that spent  the last few years of it's existence as a museum/heritage ship in Bristol’s harbour. This photo was taken after the boat was in its preserved phase in the 1980s, rather than in its working service.
