This short clip from a vintage home movie shows members of a family playing different games in the garden.
About the film
The film is a standard 8 film on a 4 inch reel which is part of a larger collection of films in a plastic film box. I've featured several of the films in this collection on vintage home movies already, for example a family playing golf, and some fascinating film of the forth rail bridge.
Each of the reels in the collection is made up of several individual 50 feet films, and they have all aged differently; some are very good but for others the passage of time has not been so kind, and the film featured in this post is unfortunately one which has suffered more than most. The colour balance was completely wrong and, whilst I was able to slightly improve this after conversion to digital, there are still some odd colours and marks on the clip.
There is no indication as to the location where the film was shot, or the date the film was taken but I've estimated the date as approx 1962 based on the other films and the fashions etc.
Some images from the film.
The images in the gallery below were taken from the 'games in the garden' film and show the serious colour casts. The lawn has a colour close to green because of the changes I made after the conversion, but this has lead to several areas which were probably white now being distinctly off.
Film of Games in the Garden
The film is quite short at just 1:20 and shows 4 members of the family playing the different games - first it's lawn darts and then 2 of them playing a game of catch in the garden.
I found the shot of the second man playing lawn darts particularly amusing; he seemed to have one dart in his hand, one behind his ear and one in his mouth!
It's possible to see that the garden is actually in front of a caravan. When the first man walks to pick up the darts from the board we can see there are a set of wooden steps which leads to the door and the obvious caravan shape. I suspect therefore that this film was taken during a holiday.
