Horsey Windpump Windmill near Great Yarmouth

Holiday in Great Yarmouth in the summer of 1978

This film follows on from the one I posted a few days ago and features the same family, but this time they are holidaying in the Norfolk coastal town of Great Yarmouth.

About the film

The film is a Super 8 film of about 6 minutes duration which suggests it was probably taken on two reel of film. The quality is actually pretty good, with only a small amount of jitter and generally well exposed and shot. Although the film doesn’t have a soundtrack, I would guess the camera used would have been pretty good quality – it certainly had a zoom lens because the photographer uses it in several sequences of the film.

Some stills from the film

As usual, I’ve included some still images from the film just to give an idea of the contents so that you only watch films you may be interested in. As you would expect or a film shot in Great Yarmouth, there are scenes on the Norfolk Broads and the family obviously spent time on the beach as well.

The film of Great Yarmouth and surrounding area.

When I watched this film I found I recognised some of the landmarks because I was born and raised in Norfolk (Fakenham), and we would occasionally go to Caister where my Aunt Beryl lived. Caister is just along the coast from Great Yarmouth, so I think we probably went there on some occasions as well.

I noticed the theatre on the pier from the film, and I certainly remember as a 4 year old going to a show in that theatre to see Harry Worth and being invited up onto the stage with my Brother. To this day I still remember lots of ladies which very long, lace covered legs dancing around me whilst I stood in an embarrassed slouch!

Other parts of the film I recognise are the Seals on Blakeney point and the Windmill which appears early in the film looks as if it is the curiously named Horsey Windpump.
