This post features a short clip (about 2 minutes) of a driving school from the 1960s which used Hillman Imp cars. It was the first half of a reel of standard 8 film which I've had for a couple of years, but only just got round to looking at.
The start of the film was shot from within one car and shows another car of the same type with a driving school logo on the top of the car. It's only later in the film that we find out the car the film was taken from is also a Hillman Imp. Because the film was taken within a moving car, this sequence is a bit shaky, so I've applied a bit of video processing on some parts to try to minimise it.
Interesting parts of Hillman Imp film
I think the most interesting things in this film are:
- The sticker on the back window of the first car which you can just see says, "I've got a Tiger in my tank". I remember this advertising slogan from the 1960s when I was a child
- The general views of the other 1960s traffic on the roads
- The petrol pumps at the garage when the cars stop. They are, of course, attended by staff at the garage and not as today self service.
- The garage attendant who is wearing a white coat!
- The Esso tiger above the petrol pumps.
- The very 1960s fashions of the Lady in the white hat being shown a car at the garage.
- The car petrol filler seems to be under the front bonnet? (I know the engine was in the back but I hadn't realised the filler cap was under the front bonnet)
