About the Westland Whirlwind helicopter
The Westland Whirlwind helicopter was made by the British company Westland Aircraft but was based on an American Sikorsky S-55 design. It was introduced in August 1952 and became one of the first helicopters to have both military and civilian uses. The aircraft was in production from it’s first flight in 1953 up until 1966 when it was replaced by the Westland Wessex.
The helicopter had a capacity of 12 people in total including the pilot and co-pilot and was often used as a medical emergency vehicle, where it could carry up to 6 stretchered patients.
