About the Hillman Avenger car
The Hillman Avenger was a popular family car made by the Rootes group under the brand name Hillman and designed by Roy Axe. As well as being know as the Avenger in the UK, the basic car was also sold around the world with a variety of different brand and model names.
The image shown here dates from 1981, and was therefore taken at about the end of the car’s production run which was from 1970 to 1981. The model in this photo is the 4 door saloon car, but an estate version was also produced.
Of a conventional rear wheel drive design, the car was available in a variety of different engine configurations ranging from 1.2L to 1.6L and competed with offering from Ford (the Ford Escort) and Vauxhall (the Vauxhall Viva). A sporty version called the Tiger was also produced, which had some success on the rally circuit.
