Marked portrait of a girl

This portrait of a young girl has a rather bad mark which covers the area just outside her head and shoulders. When I first saw the marking I wonder if it was an attempt at a stylistic effect, but I think it is just a slide which has not stood the test of time well.

I would estimate that this picture was probably taken in the early to mid 1950s - about 1955 possibly.
