Mediterranean coastal town in August 1980

A holiday snap of what appears to be a Mediterranean coastal town taken on Ektachrome film in August 1980. In the picture are palm trees, which is what suggests the Mediterranean location, and people dressed in summer clothing enjoying the sun. In the centre of the picture is a green and white VW van, but the thing that may lead to someone being able to identify the location is the statue which can be seen above the top of the van.
