Latest Newsletter from Everything Vintage – Dec 2024

Hi all – This is one of the very occasional newsletters I produce to highlight new articles that have been added to the Everything Vintage site. It’s been a long time since I last sent one out, but I’m only going to cover here the highlights of the content that’s been added to the site in the last few weeks.
The Everything Vintage site covers a lot of different vintage technologies and one of the growing sections in it is the cine projectors page. There are currently nearly 20 different models and several more in the pipeline.
In the last couple of weeks I’ve posted articles about two Elmo models, the very up-market but rather unsuccessful Elmo AP-8 and the somewhat more standard Ilford Elmo FP-C dual standard model.
If you are interested in vintage cine projectors you might like to know that there are articles in the pipeline for the first projector ever made by Canon, the Canon P8, and the Bolex M8 which in my opinion was one of the best looking cine projectors ever made. These will probably feature in the next newsletter I publish.
If vintage electronics is more your thing, then you might like to read the last article published in that category, which covered the Grundig TK-1 battery tape recorder. In this category I’m preparing an article on the Uher 4000 report-s tape recorder and the Ever Ready Sky Leader transistor radio.
Anyone who has been following Everything Vintage for a while will know that I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to improve the quality of the cine film scans so I can publish more vintage home movies.
I’ve recently had a bit of success with that and now have the capability to scan standard 8, super 8, 9.5mm and 16mm films. This has resulted in the first ever 16mm amateur film being published on Everything Vintage which was taken in Holland in the 1950s.
The new scanning machines give much better quality results than the original scanner I used, so I’m hoping to get many more films scanned over the coming months.
In the mean time, here is that 16 mm film from holland.
Another important section of the site is the vintage photos, and I’ve recently been gifted a set of colour slides which were taken in Liverpool and the surrounding countryside in the 1960s and 1970s. These have started to be added to the site, so when you next pay a visit be sure to look under the Photos section.
About Everything Vintage’s aims and operation
Everything Vintage aims to provide information, comment and nostalgia for people who are interested in technology and social history. It covers a variety of different subjects and interests and aims to be adding content most weeks.
There have recently been some changes made to the servers that run the Everything Vintage site. After many years running on a DigitalOcean VPS, I’ve recently switched to Hostinger. This change was made for both performance and cost reasons. The new VPS has twice the RAM, 20% more disk space and costs about 1/3 the price of the DigitalOcean droplet it was running on. I’ve already seen a marked improvement in the performance with load times for most content dropping from about 4 sec to just over 1 sec.
I also have taken the opportunity to refresh the site layout a bit and move back to a more conventional WordPress structure using a purchased theme which has also resulted in a faster interface.
Merry Christmas from Everything Vintage
Since this newsletter is going out in December I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and I hope you all have a happy and prosperous 2025.
I’d also like to thank the many people who donated items to Everything Vintage this year or who offered to donate items. I have real problems with storage at the moment so I’ve had to turn down some items but I am still immensely grateful to everyone who offered.
Newsletter suggestions
If anyone has any suggestions for ways the site could improve, or particular articles they would like to see, please feel free to leave a comment to his newsletter.
