Old cars and Brighton Trip from 1963

This old 8mm film shows some old cars, and some very old cars, during a trip down to the coast at Brighton.

This film was shot on Agfa standard 8 film in October 1963. Unfortunately it has suffered a bit from age and has some lines randomly dancing over some portions of the film.

Quite often, vintage home movies of the type I've been featuring on this site will cover a variety of different subjects as the photographer used their precious film sparingly to get the most from it. In the case of this film it featured four subjects:

• A shaky clip of a wedding
• The scenes of the old car seen at the start of this film
• The images of Brighton and the veteran cars arriving
• Film from Nov 5th 1963 and fireworks

The wedding scene was very short and shaky so I didn't include that in this post; I may feature the fireworks at some point, but this post concentrates on the old car aspect of the film.

It's interesting that the veteran cars should be included since I've already posted a film covering the veteran car run from London to Brighton in a film which was taken by the same, unknown, photographer. I guess the photographer was interested in cars and particularly vintage cars.

Old cars and Brighton Film

The start of the film shows an old car parked on the side of the road and a couple of small children run out to get in it. This is followed by the owner of the car coming out and opening the bonnet to do something to the engine. I don't know if this was some standard pre-journey adjustments or if there was something wrong with the car.

Anyway , the next scenes are in Brighton when the photographer has arrived to film the end point of the Veteran car run from London to Brighton. This run was a couple of years after the other run which I published and it makes me wonder if the photographer regularly attended the event.

There were a variety of old cars arriving at Brighton that day; I particularly liked the one I featured in the screen shots above - it looked so small as to hardly be a car at all. More like a pram with an engine!
