Unknown town – probably Canterbury

This is an unknown town to me although I’m sure someone who visits this page will recognise it. It’s obviously a place with some history – any suggestions anyone ?

Steve has pointed out that this is probably Canterbury in Kent but scanned the wrong way round. The picture he has linked to certainly looks the same so when I can find the slide again I’ll rescan it (I don’t keep the scans after the pictures are on the site because it would take too much disk space).
