Brittany in France from 1970

The vintage home movie which is featured in this post was taken in the region of France called Brittany during 1970.

It differs from many of the films on the site because it was shot on Super 8 film rather than Standard 8, and therefore features a cleaner, squarer format and better quality than many of the films. Unfortunately, the scanner I'm using to convert the film to digital is not very good quality((I'm glad to say I've finally taken steps to improve this situation by starting to 3d print the parts for a scanner project I found on myminifactory. )) so some of the intrinsic improvements are lost during the digitisation, but even so the film looks pretty good.

Although better quality images, one slight downside to the film is that the camera which took the movie had a lens hood fitted and in some parts of the film it can be seen at the corners giving some extreme vignetting.

The film is a fairly typical holiday movie with scenes around the coast of Brittany and then at a market and the famous Mont St Michel. It seems the initial filming is on mainland France, but the last 50 seconds or so seem to have been shot on Mont St Michel.

Although I've tried to find more precise locations than just 'Brittany' (which was written on the film reel), I've not been able to find the market or the town which opens the film. Without being able to see street names or building signs it really relies on being able to visually recognise the town layout and that's something I haven't been able to do. As with so many films on Vintage Home Movies, I'm hoping a viewer will be able to supply some information about the town in Brittany where the initial filming took place.

  1. Came here for the vintage camera shutter repair instructions, but intrigued by your request for locations in your home movie. Your opening sequence is looking towards Ilot du Verdelet from Point de Pleneuf in Pleneuf-Val-Andre.
    Looking north here:

Maybe the earlier street scenes can be worked out from that? I haven't been to the area but an Estate Agent's name written on a wall 'Agence Tillon' gave me a start. All the best with any future research.
