A seaside town in the summer of 1959

This short post presents a vintage home movie taken in the summer months of 1959 which shows a seaside town somewhere in the British Isles.

Unfortunately, although there is a note on the box this film is in which explains where it was taken, the writing is too faded to make out so I only know that this was taken somewhere in the British Isles.

Oddly, the postmark, which on films is normally impossible to read, clearly says '20 Aug 59' on it, so I know when the film was shot. I've included a picture of the box so any viewer can see if they can make out the writing. Although the image is small, if you hover over it or click it you will see a bigger version and if you can make out what it says please let me know in the comments below.

The film itself is a Kodachrome, standard 8 film and appears to have lost some of its original colour and definition. Kodachrome is normally a great film for retaining all its detail, so this is a bit unusual although I guess we should allow it a little leeway considering it is over 60 years old.

Seaside town film

I've called this post 'A Seaside Town' because I don't know the exact location and the scenes suggest that a lot of the film was taken at a seaside town, probably one at the mouth of a river, but I don't know that the entire film was taken there. It was obviously a countryside location, because there are cattle walking the road in one scene, and I noticed in another scene a car transporter crossing a stretch of water, so that may provide a clue as to the exact location.

If you have any comments about this film, or vintage home movies in general, please let me know in the comments section below.

  1. Hello, this looks like a record of a summer tour. The opening section with the shallow ford across the road is very reminiscent of the New Forest although I can't work out just where. The section from 1:13 onwards for maybe 30 seconds is definitely Dartmouth. Other scenes could be Fowey and other parts of Cornwall. I hope that helps.
