Matthew Watson General Store in Skagway, Alaska

This is a photo of the Matthew Watson General Store, a well-known historic shop in Skagway, Alaska. It dates back to the Klondike Gold Rush era (late 1890s) where Matthew Watson was an early settler and merchant in Skagway, which boomed as a gateway to the Yukon gold fields. When this photo was taken, probably in the mid 1970s, the store had long since shifted from everyday supplies to tourist goods—hence the signage for moccasins, mukluks, furs, carvings, books, and local crafts.
